Sounds of NCTC to make Hollywood come alive
Date:February 25, 2014
The annual Sounds of NCTC concert, scheduled for March 7, will take concert-goers back to the Golden Age of Hollywood.
This year’s show will feature songs that either won the Academy Award for Best Song of the Year or were nominated for an Academy Award. All musical selections will be performed by the College Singers and the NCTC Jazz Band.
Sounds of NCTC is set for 7:30 p.m., on Friday, March 7 at the First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts on the NCTC Gainesville campus.
The concert will feature NCTC’s finest students performing in ensembles, solos and duets.
According to Shane Studdard, an NCTC music instructor and director of the College Singers, concert-goers will recognize just about every song.
“It’s OK to go to a concert and hear brand new music, but it’s also a lot of fun to sit there and listen to a song that you heard in a movie for the first time when you were a kid,” Studdard said.
Then the audience will be treated to the NCTC Jazz Band, under the direction of Marty Kobuck. The band will also play some Hollywood selections along with other jazz pieces.
Among the selections concert-goers can expect to hear from the College Singers will be It Might As Well Be Spring from “State Fair,” Swinging on a Star from “Going My Way,” That’s Entertainment from “The Band Wagon,” As Time Goes By from “Casablanca,” and Over the Rainbow from “The Wizard of Oz.”
The NCTC Jazz Band will add to the Hollywood theme with familiar tunes like If I Only Had a Brain from “The Wizard of Oz,” Take the ‘A’ Train from “Paris Blues,” and And the Band Played On from “The Strawberry Blonde.”
There will be no admission charge for the concert, but donations will be accepted. Money raised will be used for scholarships.
“It’s important because not only is it an opportunity to feature a huge variety of our students in concert, it also is key to our scholarship program,” Studdard said. “All of the proceeds from this concert go to scholarships.”
