ARTS1301 - Art Appreciation

Cheryl McGrath
Instructor

Through a study of the visual universe, emphasis is placed on developing several skills essential to leading a productive and meaningful life in today's world: the ability to think, read, visually interpret and write. Students are directed toward understanding the purpose, meaning and cultural context of human expression as it is applied in two and three dimensions, film, graphic design and green/sustainable environmental design. A theme based introduction to chronological/geographical visual history from prehistoric time to Postmodernism is included. Students will be asked to complete textbook, textbook-accompanied CD-ROM and internet reading assignments. Students will also be expected to complete assignments relating to the reading, participate in online discussions, visit "real world" D/FW museums during the present semester, take photographs, digitize them into a manageable size for email and submit all assignments through the ANGEL system.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Prerequisite(s):
None

Additional
Requirements:

Email Orientation: Students are required to complete an orientation which is specific to the Art Appreciation online courses. This orientation will be emailed to the email address you are REQUIRED to provide at registration.  You must log on to ANGEL and into the Art Appreciation course with a valid email address by a specified date in order to keep from being blocked in the course. The Art Appreciation orientation must also be completed within a specified time period (this will be provided in the emailed information) in order to keep from being blocked from the course.

Required Materials:

  • A Windows PC Pentium or higher operating system, 64 MB available RAM, 40 MB Hard disk space
  • A camera with the ability to submit images in a reasonable digital file size to the course is required for several assignments and is essential to success in this course.

Be prepared to spend a minimum of 6 hours a week in preparation time for this course.  You must submit assignments according to a calendar and meaningfully participate in discussions with your peers by posted dates. This means your work is not entirely self-paced. You must participate and interact in the course within specified time intervals. The amount of time needed to complete the online courses is more than if you attend classes on campus, so the internet course is not a shortcut or easier than campus classes.

Grading: Grades are based on electronically submitted online assignments including a required recent (during the present semester) D/FW museum visit paper and a paper on a work of art from your own environment or home. There are no tests; grades are comprised of the online assignments and papers.  Several field trips into the real world are required and include outdoor photography with electronic submissions to the course by the due date. Assignments are due approximately every two weeks and are listed on a course calendar. Students may submit some of the assignments before the due date, if desired, but the course is structured to have everyone working on similar projects at the same time, and to discuss and share related experiences.
