GAINESVILLE, TEXAS – The Art Department at North Central Texas College this week announced the list of winners in the recently concluded 43rd annual NCTC Art Show.

Top entrants picked up their plaques, certificates and cash awards in formal ceremonies held in the Little Theater on the Gainesville Campus, with George Neal of the Art Department faculty officiating.

Neal, who recently joined the faculty teaching art history and art appreciation, said that art is “one of the great factors which pull a people together, and our theme, ‘Friends,’ was especially fitting for me personally because of the many new friends he’s made since coming to NCTC.

“I was happy to discover that our program and our show is supported by a wonderful community of local area artists,” he added, “and I have been very impressed by the exceptional quality of teaching our public school participants are receiving from their teachers.”

The number of entries in the various student divisions was up over last year, with 150 works submitted for judging.

The awards ceremony capped a week-long public exhibition of the entries in a wide range of media categories ranging from oil painting and jewelry to digital photography and sculpture. Awards were given to top entries in both student and non-student divisions.

“Because of the overall quality of the competition, this year’s winners should be especially proud to have been singled out for recognition,” said NCTC Art Department coordinator Jimmy Staples. “And we’re very grateful to all who entered our show for sharing their work with us.

Staples also gave special recognition to the Gainesville Area Visual Arts (GAVA) organization for the key role it played again this year in helping organize, hang and host the show.

He also singled out his assistant Pat Boyd, who served this year as show chairman, for her contribution to the success of the event, and he expressed special appreciation to the Cooke County Arts Council for its financial support.

A highlight of this year’s awards ceremony was the presentation of several special awards, including the “Best of Show” award to Stuart Hausmann for his acrylic painting “Friends: Fragments of Memories.” Brittni Brock from Denton High School won the theme award for her painting “Best Friends—A Piece of My Heart.” The “People’s Choice” award went to Madison Pearse, Era 4-H Club, for “Spring in Bloom.”

Winner of the award given by the Grand Avenue Animal Clinic for an animal-themed work was Mary Baker, Immaculate Conception School, for “Mosaic Cat.” Cindy Westbrook captured the Powell Fine Art Gallery award for her acrylic “Warming Light.”

New special awards were given this year. Saint Jo’s nationally recognized western artist Donna Sickles-Howell presented an award and scholarship to Kristina Malig for her oil painting “Veranda II.” First State Bank sponsored awards given to home school student Stephanie Fink for “Hey Pal!” and to Jack Milchanowski for his photograph “Woody.”

This year’s art show judge was Barbara Elam of 416 West Gallery in Denison.
