![MARTY KOBUCK](/nctcforms/images_dyn/393.jpg) | | MARTY KOBUCK | NCTC JAZZ BAND PRESENTS FALL CONCERT NOVEMBER 12
GAINESVILLE, TX—Jazz lovers, especially those who like their jazz played live, should mark November 12 (Thursday) on their calendars and arrange to be on the Gainesville Campus of North Central Texas College.
The NCTC Jazz Band will present its annual fall concert that evening, beginning at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage of the First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts. It’s open to the public at no charge.
The band’s conductor, Marty Kobuck, director of instrumental music studies at the college, said the concert program “is a unique combination of jazz styles including up-tempo swing, Latin jazz, down-home blues, and even a Broadway show tune.”
“A highlight of the concert will be the addition of adjunct instructor Kent Hillman on drum set,” Kobuck said. “He’s an outstanding percussionist who also plays vibraphone and who adds a special, high-energy dimension to many of the numbers we’ll be performing.
Kobuck said Hillman comes to the NCTC Jazz Band from California by way of the University of North Texas and its internationally acclaimed jazz program.
“I’m also really excited about our student soloists this year. Almost every musician in the band will be featured on the down-home blues song Late Night Diner.”
In addition, sax player Rich Godoy will be featured on Elvin’s Empire and Cubano Chant. The rhythm section will be showcased on Gordon Goodwin’s It’s All Right With Me—a piece Kobuck said has a unique tone quality including guitar and vibraphone melody lines reminiscent of George Shearing’s band.
Another selection on the program is the popular Broadway hit Put on a Happy Face from Bye, Bye Birdie.
In addition to the concert program, Kobuck said he hopes area music lovers will add some other upcoming events to their calendars including a Corinth Music Department Concert on December 1 at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Denton. Admission is free to the general public.
That will be followed on December 3 by the Gainesville Music Department Concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. at First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts. Admission to this concert is free as well.
