TWU DANCERS TO PERFORM AT NCTC

GAINESVILLE, TEXAS – Local audiences have an opportunity on March 2 (Thursday) to see the only one of the performings arts yet to be individually spotlighted on the main stage of the First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts (FSBCPA) at North Central Texas College.

Dance is what this special program is all about, and it will feature representatives of the Dance Department at Texas Woman’s University performing several modern dance presentations including two solo pieces, a duet and two group pieces.

The program, scheduled from noon to 1 p.m., is open to the general public as well as all NCTC students, faculty and staff, at no charge.

“We are so very excited over the opportunity to host these TWU dance majors,” said Gabrielle Fletcher, director of NCTC’s Department of Fine Arts. “For one thing, it will demonstrate the wonderful way our beautiful new facility will accommodate dance, a program we’ll be adding to our own performing arts curriculum in the near future.

“In fact, we will be adding dance courses to our schedule this fall, and our ultimate goal is to develop a strong comprehensive dance program to complement our existing programs in drama and both instrumental and vocal music.”

Fletcher said students will have the opportunity this fall to enroll in both dance appreciation and dance performance classes. For the performance classes, the FSBCPA offers a rehearsal and teaching studio expressly designed for dance, complete with a special floor surface, mirrors and a dance barre.

Instructor for some of the initial dance course offerings this fall will be Michelle Contrino, a graduate dance student from TWU who is coordinating the March 2 noon exhibition.

Contrino holds a bachelor’s degree in dance performance and choreography from Arizona State University. She will earn her master’s degree in dance performance and choreography from TWU this May. Contrino has performed professionally in international venues as well as working professionally in commercials.

Ms. Contrino said she’s excited about coming to teach at NCTC this fall as an adjunct instructor and hopes to provide dance experiences as part of a basic arts education and an overall appreciation of the arts in general.

“I’m also excited about the program at NCTC on March 2,” she said. “I hope the audience will enjoy seeing a variety of styles and music with these pieces. These dancers have worked hard this semester and are thrilled to have the opportunity to perform on stage here in Gainesville.”
