Title IX Advocates
If you are a victim of sexual harassment, sexual violence, stalking, or dating/domestic violence, you can fully expect our support and commitment to insuring your safety-regardless of where or when the assault occurred. Our student advocates in the NCTC Counseling Office are here to assist you with the following:
Making sure you feel heard and understand this is NOT YOUR FAULT
Addressing your immediate needs and concerns and ensuring your personal welfare
Providing information about campus and community resources and make appropriate referrals
Discussing any academic concerns and finding solutions if needed regarding campus housing or class schedule changes
Helping you with filing any reports and talking with campus police
Accompanying you to any hearings or meetings where you want an advocate present
Providing ongoing support and follow-up by meeting on a regular basis
What to Expect from an Advocate
Confidentiality. Assurance that what you share will be kept private and confidential, barring any legal exceptions and/or your permission.
Respect, empathy and support. Advocates are there to listen, not to pass judgment or investigate.
A survivor-centered approach to advocacy. We acknowledge that you are the expert in your situation. Advocates have knowledge and experience to assist you in making informed choices, but those choices are yours and deserve to be respected.
Helping a Friend
Do you have a friend who has experienced sexual harassment or sexual violence? In order to help them in the best ways possible, you can:
Listen with compassion
Direct them to available sources
Not take everything on your shoulders
Getting the appropriate, trained professionals involved is the best thing you can do to help a friend get the help they may need.
