 Verification

Verification is an audit of FAFSA® data. If selected, students must complete the verification process before financial aid funds are awarded. Students unable to complete verification prior to school starting will need to find an alternative method of payment for tuition and fees in order to hold classes. Verifications are processed throughout the semester, so once verification is complete, students will be considered for a late financial aid award and be refunded accordingly.

A few tips for a quick and successful verification process:

  • When applying for FAFSA®, you will be given the option to retrieve your tax data by using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. Using the IRS DRT automatically populates yours/your parent's tax information into the FAFSA® application. This process helps reduce errors and lowers your chances of being selected for verification.

  • When completing your FAFSA® application, make sure to enter correct social security numbers, dates of birth, legal names, correct address, and don't forget to sign and date your FAFSA® using your FSAID and password.

  • If you are selected for verification, providing a good email address for both student and parent (if applicable) on the FAFSA® application is important. Student and parent email addresses need to be different.

  • Keep an eye out for emails from "Student Aid Processing".

PARENTS WHO HAVE MORE THAN ONE CHILD ENROLLED AT NCTC PLEASE READ

If you have more than one child enrolled at NCTC and will fill out the FAFSA®, make sure the parent email is DIFFERENT for each of your children. This will streamline the verification process.

NCTC Verification Process

The Financial Aid office will send an e-mail to the student that says, “thank you for applying for financial aid at North Central Texas College.” This e-email will give the student steps on how to create a new user account and log into the Financial Aid Portal. Once in the financial aid portal, student should follow the links on the "Your Documents and Messages" found on the MENU icon. If the student is selected for verification under the documents it will say “Selected for Verification.” The student will need to click on the blue hyperlink which will take them to the verification website, here they will need to click on “Create Account.” Once logged into the verification portal students will need to provide the requested documents. Once all required documents are submitted please allow 7-10 business days to be reviewed, if no other documentation is needed the student will receive an award notice once verification is complete and financial aid is awarded.

If tax information is needed, you have two choices. Either log onto your FAFSA® application at www.FAFSA.ed.gov , choose make corrections, and "Link to IRS" in the financial information section, sign application with your FSA ID and submit correction. If this option will not work, call 1-800-829-1040 and request a TAX RETURN TRANSCRIPT from the IRS. This document can be mailed to you within 7-10 business days or faxed to YOU ONLY for privacy purposes.

If you think you have made mistakes on the FAFSA® application, you can correct mistakes by going to www.FAFSA.ed.gov and choose "Make Corrections". If you are unsure about needing to make a correction or do not feel comfortable making a correction on your own feel free to come to the Financial Aid Office for help.
